Vrazhite Dupki is a 20m high, 1km long south-facing rock ridge in the Probojnitsa River valley near Lakatnik station. Featuring a labyrinth of caves and a built-up base path, it is a popular climbing spot.
The site is tied to the legend of outlaw Valchan Voivode and a hidden treasure of 9 human-sized gold buckets from robbed Turkish treasuries. According to storytellers, a local goat herd named Rada Robova brought food to the outlaws in the caves, and Valchan even carved her image into a cave wall. However, Rada’s brother persuaded her to poison the outlaws with hemlock to steal the gold.
Valchan realized the plot when Rada couldn't look him in the eye, and confirmed it by feeding the dish to his dog, which died. As punishment, Valchan beheaded Rada, placing her body among the gold coins and her head on a treasure chest. Her death cursed the hoard: anyone who touched it would become its permanent guardian or lose a young relative. The outlaws then walled up the cave.
Later, a shepherd boy from Gubislav spotted the glinting gold through a rock crack. Locals began taking coins, but when the curse struck, they started borrowing and returning the money to stay safe. After two men failed to return their share and went mad, village elders permanently sealed the opening.
Today, Valchan Voivode’s treasure remains hidden, its exact cave unknown.
