Ochin dol village - Klyuch shelter - Parshevitsa hut

4 hours
7.3 km

The route begins at the Ochin Dol village center, heading up a steep street behind the town hall. Passing the ruins of a medieval basilica, a dirt road leads through a forest to the Padezh area in about 40 minutes. This vast pasture features a gazebo and a trail junction; take the path climbing toward the mountain ridge (following yellow and red markings).

The trail ascends steeply through thick bushes before opening into rocky meadows, reaching the Klyuch shelter in about an hour. Picturesquely built against a rock face, it offers excellent views of the Iskar Gorge.

Continuing north-northeast toward Ostra Mogila, the path crosses a beech forest and emerges onto the open ridge of the Vratsa Balkan (about 1 hour). A small peak on the left offers views of Kobilini Steni and Beglichka Mogila (the mountain's highest peak, accessible via an optional 15-minute off-trail climb). Semi-wild horses often graze in this area.

The final section follows the valley east of Beglichka Mogila, ending with a short walk through a beech forest to reach Parshevitsa Hut (accessible by car from Vratsa).

Important Warnings:

  • Water: There is no reliable drinking water along the entire route, as the fountains at Padezh and Klyuch frequently dry up.
  • Navigation: The open ridge above Ostra Mogila lacks winter stake markings, making orientation very difficult in snow or heavy fog.

  • The route is marked with yellow tourist markings.
  • Information signs are placed at characteristic places.
  • There are places for recreation and panoramic platforms.
  • There is no water on the route.
  • In winter or in fog on the ridge (above Ostra Mogila), orientation can be difficult.
